Botanical name: Curcuma aurantiaca    Family: Zingiberaceae (Ginger family)

Rainbow Ginger is a perennial herb with a rhizome that is not elongated. Flowers are borne at branch-ends on a leafy shoot. The bracts are yellow-green in color while the comma bracts are red to pink or purple in colour. Petals are about 4.5cm long, orange to orange-yellow, lip is about 2 x 1.5 cm, orange with a darker center. The other staminoides are straight and orange in color while the anther is not spurred. Leaf sheaths are about 12 cm long, eliptical. Leaf blades are about 19-50 x 8-21 cm, dark green. Rainbow Ginger is native to India to SE Asia.
Medicinal uses: The rhizomes have a camphor scent. They are used medicinally for their astringent properties.
